June 25, 2020 End of the Year Celebration

For the first time in Newport Rotary history, the end of the year meeting took place on Zoom with a few board members at the Best Western. This year took an odd twist as COVID-19 hit, but as usual, Newport Rotarians stepped up and continued to support the community. Julie Hanrahan did a fantastic job as president leading the club through difficult times. She handed over the club leadership duties to Freddy Saxton. Julie gave her exit speech and President Saxton described his goals for the upcoming year. Julie handed out several awards and thanked the members for everything that was accomplished this year.

Today was our 10th Zoom meeting with 31 members in attendance. President Hanrahan announced that Julia Carlson achieved her Paul Harris +6. Thanks Julia for your generous donations!! Catherine Rickbone, Executive Director for the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts announced that she is retiring effective July 2nd. Thanks for your enthusiasm and passion for the arts for the past 13 years!! Today's program was led by Freddy Saxton and Doretta Smith who described the local real estate scene during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, inbound exchange student Noémie Hermant described her life back in France.
Today was our seventh Zoom Rotary meeting since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our last in-person meeting was March 12th, which seems like a long time ago. Today's program was led by inbound exchange student Noémie Hermant, who described her life back in the beautiful and historic town of Dunkirk, France. It was interesting learning about the traditions of Dunkirk and also seeing her family!! Good job Noémie!!

Both speeches were well-done and both of these students have a bright future after graduating from Newport High.

The 2nd part of the program, President Hanrahan and Club Treasurer Mark Miranda gave an update of the club's finances.

Today, was our third Zoom meeting with over 35 members attending. President Hanrahan announced two more donations to local agencies: 1. $1,250 to the Olalla Center in Toledo and 2. $1,000 to the local Salvation Army. Both of these donations will help families in need during the COVID-19 crisis. Chris Chandler of Central Lincoln PUD gave an informative presentation from her electric vehicle, explaining the benefits of driving an electric car. Good job Newport Rotarians!!

The club met for the 2nd time via Zoom. Many members took part in the meeting with various reports. Ursula Marinelli talked about how much the hospital employees appreciated the free meals donated by Rotary on Monday. Reyna Mattson introduced the March Students of the Month, Luke Bachart and Audrey Vanderhoff. Both students gave their speeches on video and did a great job.

April 16, 2020- Rotary of Newport's 1st Zoom Meeting
The Rotary Club of Newport meets through Zoom on April 16, 2020.
The Rotary Club of Newport held their first meeting via Zoom on Thursday, due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was great to see everyone. President Hanrahan and several members updated the club on many topics since there has not been a meeting since March 12. President Hanrahan described the four ways the club will help our community through the crisis: 1. $2,000 donation to the Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital Patient Support Fund 2. Providing meals on April 20th to all Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital employees. 3. $500 to the Foster Parents program. 4. Donating $1,000 a month for May, June and July to Lincoln County Food Share. The club will continue to meet via Zoom until the quarantine is lifted.

At today's meeting, three Newport High students took part in the Rotary Four Way Test Speech Contest. All three contestants did a great job!! 1st place and $300 went to Daisy O'Hearn who spoke about Cyber Bullying. 2nd place and $200 went to Kaeden Fletcher-Vogel who talked about Climate Change. 3rd place and $100 went to Josue Sanchez Valencia who talked about the dangers of Fake News. All three students gave impressive speeches and will move on to the next level of competition in Florence. Also, Gerry Kosanovic President of the Rotary Club of Greater Corvallis and 2021-22 District Governor visited to watch the Four Way Test Speech Contest.

Dr. Lesley Ogden gives an update on hospital construction and the coronavirus.
At today's meeting, Laura Kimberly stood in for President Hanrahan. Nice job Laura!! The program was led by Dr. Lesley Ogden, CEO of both North Lincoln and Pacific Communities hospitals. Dr. Ogden gave an update on the construction of the Newport hospital and also talked about the impact of the coronavirus on Lincoln County. Lots of good information. Also, the Rotary Club of Newport surprised expecting new mother Lola Jones with Rotary baby clothes and a stuffed piggy bank for Forrest's college fund. Thanks to Kathy Heater for arranging these gifts.

At today's meeting, President Hanrahan and Rob Wienert sold some of the left over open cases of wine from last weekend's Seafood & Wine Festival. Thanks to all members that purchased wine!! Today, we had three Students of the Month speak: February was represented by Sage Clemons and Liam Versteeg and the January student was Dakota Rundell. All three students gave amazing and heart-felt speeches. Also, the President of the Rotary Club of Redmond, Marvin Kaplan and his wife Louise Kaplan shared their successes with the Rotary Club of Redmond.

At today's meeting, Student of the Month Josue Sanchez and Student of the Quarter Jobie Rasar spoke to the club. Josue has earned a 3.96 GPA, is Senior Class President, and is involved in the school newspaper and theatre. Josue will attend Oregon State University and study computer science. Jobie Rasar is a senior at Newport High and is in the ECEL Program. Jobie is involved in the Unified Program and Leadership class. His favorite thing of Newport High was "to be able to be myself and become the best Jobie I can be." What amazing students!!

Today's meeting was a busy one!! First, the club prepared for the Seafood & Wine Festival to be held in February. Frank Matsko from the OLCC trained potential wine servers and Kevin Goodwin from WX Brand Wines described the wines to be sold at the Rotary booth. Thanks to Megan Schain for all of her work on this event. Next, club member Aimee Thompson introduced the three short-term exchange students that will be visiting a foreign country next summer. They are Echo Stewart, Harper Thomson and Braylon Belloni. Aimee also introduced the 2020-21 NHS outbound exchange student Sophie Whitacre. She will be traveling to the Czech Republic in August.

January 9th marks the first meeting of 2020 and it was a busy one. President Hanrahan presented new member Peggy Walker her "Blue Badge" which signifies she has completed all requirements for full membership. Congratulations to Peggy!! Today's program was led by Newport Rotarian and former Mayor of Newport Sandy Roumagoux. Sandy walked us through her journey of becoming an artist and shared some of her work. What an amazing talent!! Foreign exchange student Noémie Hermant from France prepared crepes for today's dessert. They were very tasty. Proceeds from this will go to fund her year-end trip to California.

At today's meeting, Doris Lamb of Blue Heron In-Home Care described the services her company provides for people in need of specialized care at home. We were introduced to our new inbound exchange student Noémie Hermant from France and the club signed dozens of thank-you cards for WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans headed to Washington D.C.

Today, the Rotary Club of Newport purchased and assembled ten "Launch Boxes" for foster child 18-21 years of age, that have exited the program and are moving to be on their own. The boxes contain household items to help them with their new journey. Accepting the boxes are Angela Cazares, Permanency Supervisor and Julie Davis, Program Manager for the Department of Human Services. Also, Sonia Graham gave an update on the "Seas the Day" fundraiser as over $11,000 was raised.
